The African Academy of Sciences has set up the DELTAS Africa Community and Public Engagement (CPE) Seed Fund themed round on Gender Equity in Science; a scheme aimed to enhance gender equity and equality in science.  This scheme is open to DELTAS Africa affiliated doctoral and postdoctoral trainees.

Gender disparities and gender power dynamics continue to exist in various aspects of human activities including in science, research and innovation, with women being disproportionately impacted. Today women account for only 30% of the world’s researchers, and even lower percentages at higher decision-making levels. http://www.unesco.org/new/en/natural-sciences/priority-areas/gender-and-science/.

The under-representation and slow progression of women in science and senior scientific career positions is a persistent and well-documented problem; particularly in academia in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

The AAS, in partnership with UK Department for International Development (DFID), and Wellcome will through this fund enable DELTAS Africa doctoral and postdoctoral trainees to; Implement engagement projects that enhance gender equitable career advancement in science and contribute to the global gender equality agenda, enable DELTAS Africa programmes to build engagement capacity of their researchers and programmes, and pilot programmes of activity to promote societal impact of DELTAS Africa research and move towards people-centered approaches.

Interested DELTAS Africa doctoral and postdoctoral candidates are invited to apply through The AAS Grants Management System Ishango: https://aasishango.ccgranttracker.com
