       Short-Term Fellowships to African Delegates to The Intelligent Health Conference In Basel, Switzerland

    Background

    Artificial Intelligence has the potential to have a transformational impact on healthcare globally, but more specifically in low and middle income (LMICs) countries by leveraging the power of big data, machine learning and algorithms to bridge the infrastructural and human capacity gaps in these countries. However, these countries face the challenge of human resources, capacity and exposure to new and emerging digital technologies, as they seek to optimize their healthcare systems using Artificial Intelligence.

    With the mission to bring together the brightest brains in healthcare and tech, and make sure Artificial Intelligence improves the health of the human race, the Intelligent Health conference continues a conversation around Artificial Intelligence that is gaining prominence globally.

    Bringing together 2000 attendees and 100 speakers, Intelligent Health 2018 will host the world’s brightest AI health brains from across the entire AI health ecosystem of pharmaceutical, biotech, medtech, health provision, clinicians, insurance, investment and science. These thinkers and doers will be inspiring the AI health tech revolution through two jam-packed days of health tech goodness, from applied AI case studies to announcements from the tech giants, to nitty-gritty coding workshops, and of course, passionate debate on ethics and AI4good in health.


    The Short-term Fellowships

    As part of its efforts to support the continent’s digital health eco-system, the African Alliance of digital health networks - with support from Fondation Botnar (https://www.fondationbotnar.org/) and the Community Health Academy (http://lastmilehealth.org/chacademy/) - is offering five (5) fellowships to support the participation of African delegates to the Intelligent Health summit, in Basel - Switzerland from 12th to 13th of September 2018. This forms part of the African Alliance’s mission to appropriately capacitate around and expose the digital health eco-system on the continent to new technologies.

     

    The selection of beneficiaries will include a short write-up describing learning objectives and relevance of the conference to the applicant’s job/ role and how learnings will be applied.


    The fellowship will cover;

    - Round trip economy class ticket to Basel & ground transport, (in Basel) if required

    - Hotel accommodation in Basel, Switzerland for 4 nights (10th - 13th September 2018)

    - Allowance for meals and incidental expenses for 4 days (10th - 13th September 2018)

    - Conference fees (provided by Inspired Minds, organizers of the Intelligent Health Conference)


    The fellowship will not cover, applicants are expected to cover;

    - Visa processing fees, airport fees, taxes, insurance and other expenses

    - Bring a personal laptop

    - Should shoulder their own travel insurance

    - Local transfers (home to country airport; country airport to home)


    Eligibility Criteria

    - Must be based in Africa

    - Must submit a statement elucidating how learnings from the conference can be leveraged to support national and regional digital health development

    - Must have a passport with 6 months validity from date of arrival to the city of the meeting


    Selection process timeline Call for applicants open August 2nd, 2018 Call for applicants close August 10th, 2018 Applications are reviewed August 10th – 12th, 2018 Successful applicants are announced August 13th Successful applicants travel September 10th - 14th

    The African Alliance of digital health networks (“African Alliance”) is a peer learning network that aims to align and leverage the strengths of and lessons learned from existing networks to ensure that African countries have the best and most appropriate support needed to develop robust digital health systems, further innovate upon these systems, and to build health workforce digital capacity more generally.
