The University places emphasis on the following research clusters;

  • Innovations in Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing-There is a strong global movement on the need to tackle the problem of anti-microbial resistance in sub Saharan Africa and beyond. With an increasing burden of communicable and drug-resistance diseases, lack of routine drug sensitivity testing and surveillance would imply that antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs are not rationally used. In this case, research with a focus on genetic relatedness to bacterial resistance is a priority area for IHSU. Robust evidence is needed to inform the:
    • Appropriate modification of antibiotics
    • Development of bacteriophages substituting antibiotics
  • Other areas of interest include; Cancer etiology and Tuberculosis point of care testing technology
