• Before the Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence was opened in 2012, cancer care was completely inaccessible for the vast majority of Rwandans. Only the wealthiest individuals could afford to seek treatment outside of the country. An average Rwandan woman diagnosed with breast cancer was previously assured of an almost certain death sentence even though this cancer has a cure rate of over 80 percent in the United States. The Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence is an ambitious collaboration between the Rwandan Ministry of Heath and PIH.
