The Young East African Scientists National Workshops

03 Jun 2023

Today, 3rd June 2023 marks the end of the Young East African Research Scientists’ (YEARS’) national workshop which has been concluded in Bujumbura city, Republic of Burundi. The journey started in March 2023 in the Republic of Kenya, where young researchers met to strengthen the research skills and knowledge that is usually not provided in formal academia settings. The skills are designed to improve their effectiveness as researchers.

YEARS’ Forum creates a culture of research and support for young scientists in health science by building a network of six PhD students from each of the six EAC countries (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda) and linking them with a network of senior health research professionals across the region, and at the same time each of the six PhD students establishing in his/her country a team of six members with a similar field of interest in order to work together in defined research activities.

The EAHRC has already organized 5 sessions for YEARS including capacity-building sessions in leadership and mentorship and capacity-building in ecosystem research skills. In addition, the EAHRC organized the inaugural session of YEARS’ Baraza during the 5th Session of the YEARS’ Forum. The training consisted of regional workshops where we invite PhD students accompanied by a few mentees.
